Probability

noun · Mathematics

Definition

A number from 0 to 1 that measures how likely an event is.

Explanation

0 means impossible and 1 means certain. When outcomes are equally likely, probability equals favourable outcomes divided by total outcomes.

Example

The probability of rolling an even number on a fair die is 1/2.

Common confusion

Probabilities cannot be greater than 1. Past results do not change the probability of independent events.
