Evaluate

verb · Command words

Definition

Weigh strengths and limitations and reach a supported judgment.

Explanation

An evaluation considers evidence on more than one side, then gives a conclusion with reasons. A response that only lists strengths or only lists weaknesses is usually incomplete.

Example

Evaluate the reliability of a diary as evidence about daily life in wartime.

In an exam

Command-word meanings can vary between subjects, exam boards and mark schemes, so check your own board's guidance. See Exam Command Words: What Each Instruction Asks For.

Common confusion

Evaluate asks for a judgment. Describing the source or listing facts without a verdict does not meet the command word.
