Using Practice Questions Effectively
How to practise so that every question teaches you something.
Practice questions are most useful when you treat them as diagnostic tools, not as scoreboards.
Try before you look
Attempt the question without notes. Retrieving information from memory strengthens it more than rereading.
Mark honestly
Compare your answer with the answer key. If you got it right, check that your reasoning, not only your final answer, matches the explanation.
Classify your mistakes
For each error, decide which type it is:
- Knowledge gap: you did not know the idea.
- Misunderstanding: you applied an idea incorrectly.
- Careless error: you knew it but slipped, for example a sign error.
- Misread question: you answered a different question.
Each type needs a different fix. Knowledge gaps need review. Misunderstandings need a clearer explanation. Careless errors need a checking habit. Misread questions need a habit of underlining the command word.
Keep an error log
A short list of mistakes and the fix for each is a powerful revision tool. Reread it the evening before the exam.
Practise under realistic conditions sometimes
Occasionally do a set of questions with a timer and no notes. This shows you how you perform under pressure.
Check where questions come from
Use questions from your teacher, textbook or exam board where possible. Questions on this site are original practice and are not official exam content.
Quick recap
Attempt first, mark honestly, classify mistakes, keep an error log, and sometimes practise under timed conditions.
